Kauai Veterans Cemetery to Receive $1.2 Million for Expansion

Hawaii will receive $1.2 million to expand and refurbish the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe, Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Senator Daniel K. Akaka, U.S. Representative Mazie K. Hirono and U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa announced today.

The funds come from a grant administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The money for Hawaii is part of more than $47 million that was distributed to 15 states.

The Kauai Veterans Cemetery currently sits on 5.44-acres of state owned land in Hanapepe. The expansion project will add six acres and 4,500 gravesites to the cemetery in three phases.

"As a veteran of World War II, I understand very well the commitment and sacrifices that come with putting on the uniform and fighting for this country. I watched too many of my friends die in combat and over the years I have said farewell to many of my brothers in arms. Their final resting place becomes the last location where their loved ones may go to honor them. I would like to thank the administration for investing in the preservation of their dignity and their legacy of commitment to this country," said Senator Inouye.

"Kauai's veterans, like so many veterans across the nation, served with honor and sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy. These heroes must never be forgotten. That's why I am proud to see Hawaii's own President Obama and Kauai-born Secretary of Veterans Affairs Shinseki supporting Kauai Veterans Cemetery's significant expansion. We will ensure that those who wore the uniform of the United States have the dignity of a worthy final resting place," said Congresswoman Hirono.

"I would like to thank the administration for this grant that will support the necessary expansion and improvements at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. Our veterans sacrificed so much for this country and we have an obligation to ensure that their final resting place is honorable and distinguished," said Congresswoman Hanabusa, member of the House Armed Services Committee.
